CONCERN over the uncertainty of the role of ‘Tourism’ in council’s structure was flagged during public submissions to Mansfield Shire council’s draft 2017/18 budget last week.
“I am surprised to see council’s organisational structure doesn’t have tourism named in its senior management team,” Dr Will Twycross told councillors.
“I’d really like to see the word tourism somewhere in that senior management team, because tourism for the shire is huge, and if it is not named, how do you actually advocate for it?
“I understand the budgetary constraints council are under, but by my calculations about $400,000 has gone out of the tourism and economic development department in the last few years.
“That’s a really big slice, and that may be sustainable for a while, but it mightn’t be sustainable into the future.”
In Dr Twycross’s written submission he stated, “On my reckoning, successive budgets have cut more severely into this sector than any other.
