MANSFIELD Shire mayor Paul Volkering has said the saleyards will not be sold, but discussion around the site’s future must start now.
But the mayor said the door is open for a future sale of the site if council can find an outcome that is “acceptable to the community”.
“No sale is going to happen without further extensive community consultation beyond the budget period and through to the years ahead,” said Cr Volkering.
“Council has heard what it needed to hear with regards to the saleyards.
“We’ve heard the message from the community.”
Eighteen submissions to council were made against the sale of the site.
The depth of feeling around the historical importance and future potential of the land seems to have compelled councillors against selling off the land for profit.
“The basic thing is there’s been a lot of community input that’s been recognised by councillors,” said Cr Volkering.
