Youth determined to see cafe rise from the ashes

DESTROYED: All that is left of the computer room at Cafe Connect.

WHILE police continue to investigate who is responsible for the fire that gutted Mansfield’s Cafe Connect last week, efforts are well underway to rebuild a specific space for the town’s youth.
Mansfield Shire Council’s chief executive officer David Roff said the destruction of Cafe Connect – the shire’s dedicated youth space – had been quite a shock.
“Detectives attended the scene and determined that the fire was deliberately lit and some items were stolen,” he said.
“The kids feel deeply upset about the loss of their beloved space, especially in this context.”
The youth space, in High Street, is popular and regularly has some 200-300 visits each week, including a round 90 youth who attend Friday nights for barbecues and internet game competitions.
The building has also been home to Radio Mansfield for the past 10 years – and with its studio front window open to passersby has become a popular place for broadcasting.
