To the Coomsberg and back for bike riders

NOT FAST BUT ENTHUSIASTIC: The C grade group (from left) Rod Manning, Amy Jewson, Steve Flew, Craig Wilson, John Eisner and Ian Conrick began their entertaining evening on the road.

MT Buller Road from the BP Roadhouse to a turnaround over the hill at Hearn’s Road and back again, was the course for the Graded Scratch race last Thursday night.

Three grades of riders ranging from ‘guns’ to ‘not so fast but enthusiastic’ were chosen.

The fun of the scratch race is that all riders in the same group leave together and race for the finish.

The effect is that the pace is usually more sedate and the group usually sticks together until the final sprint.

That is, of course, unless one or more riders are confident enough to make a break and set up a gap on the rest of the field, usually on a hill.

Apart from the hill on both sides of Hearn’s Lane, the Buller Road course is generally flat.
