MANSFIELD’S junior mountain bike Rider Kian Lerch-Mackinnon shone brightly with gold medal performances at the recent 2015 ‘Subaru’ MTBA National Mountain Bike Championships.
Held at Bright from March 13-15, Lerch-Mackinnon won gold on his 16th birthday in the under 17s’ XCO Olympic Cross Country race event on the Friday.
He then completed the weekend’s competitions with another gold medal in the XCC event on Sunday, making it a huge weekend and capping off an exciting season for the local Ancona champion.
Lerch-Mackinnon’s ‘two from two’ National Championship titles at Bright follows his successful campaign through the 2014-2015 MTBA National Cross Country Olympic (XCO) Series, in which he won the overall under 17 men’s category.
The National Series calendar included five rounds starting at the ‘You Yangs’ in December, rounds 2 and 3 in Pemberton, then Canberra and Toowoomba last month.
In Sunday’s race Lerch-Mackinnon pulled away from the XCO field of 36 riders with a speed averaging 20.73km/hour over three laps of the 5.9 kilometre trail at Mystic MTB Park and climbed a total elevation of 294.0m, completing the 17.70 kilometre course in a fast 50 minutes and 40.3 seconds (faster lap times compared with the junior men’s category).
