MANSFIELD residents are being warned to lock their homes during the Easter break with record numbers of thefts occurring during the busy weekend.

Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last week showed there were more than 31,000 residential burglaries in 2014.
 
In more than 28,000 cases, residents were not present at the time of the offence and 325 were reported during the Easter period. 

Acting Superintendent Mick McGinn from the Victoria Police Safer Community Group said it was the perfect time of year to rethink home security. 

“It doesn’t matter if you’re going out for an hour or away for a week,” he said.

“If your house looks unattended then you become an easy target.
