YOUNG Mansfield apprentice jockey Jye McNeil has won the Rising Stars event two years running, which has seen him nominated the Sportsperson of the Year nominee for the month of July.
Going into race 3 at Flemington in the third week of July, Jye was tied for a win with Jackie Beriman and needed to finish in the first five to win the $6000 Rising Stars prize.
Beriman was in the USA representing Australia in the Apprentice World Championship series, so Jye saddled up Every Faith in her stead, guiding her to a fifth place in the 1800m event, winning the prize outright.
This result is even better than last year’s when the prize was tied with apprentice jockey Regan Bayliss.
“Going into the race, I thought Every Faith was my best chance; I’m a bit disappointed I didn’t finish any better than fifth but I’m still very happy to have won the series,” Jye said.
“It was really good to win the series twice; it’s a good prize – a $6000 voucher on Myers.
