New security to trap costly ‘dumpers’

NOT A RUBBISH TIP: The space outside Mansfield Vinnies is often used as a dumping ground, despite warning signs.

DUMPING of unwanted goods by residents at the local Vinnies store should soon be a thing of the past, with new security cameras set to catch those illegal dumpers.

Any amount of rubbish is dumped during the night, but the biggest problem for Vinnies is the old and used mattresses, which cost around $27 each to take to the local tip.

Under government law second hand mattresses cannot be sold.

To stop the practice, security cameras have been installed in many Vinnies stores, including Mansfield, which are capable of both facial and number plate recognition.

Offenders are recorded on a hard disc, which can be accessed remotely by the Victorian assets protection manager, Andrew Bolzon.

“We are delighted with the quality of the images that this system captures,” Mr Bolzon said.
