Delatite’s close encounter in round one

THE Delatite First XI cricketers travelled to the Barr Reserve in Wangaratta to contest round one of the Geoff Welch Cup against the City Colts CC, one of last season’s WDCA semi-finalists.

In what was a very tight and exciting contest, Delatite went down by just six runs on the second last ball of the 40 over match.

Captain Matt Stevenson won the toss and sent the Colts in to gain first use of what appeared to be a rather patchy track that appeared like it may initially advantage the bowling side.

Having not had the pleasure of seeing the young Delatite pace attack of Patrick Marks, Nathan Purcell and James Cousins, the Colts batsmen played with some caution.

Continuing from last season’s fine effort with the ball, Purcell bowled tidily and took 3/27 from eight overs while Stevenson impressed with a fiery exhibition of pace bowling that netted him 4/15 from just five overs.

The only downside to Delatite’s otherwise fine fielding efforts was the wide deliveries that presented the opposition with the gift of 17 extra runs.
