Q&A - 2022 state election - Eildon Candidates

Jane Judd - Australian Labor Party

How do you propose to address the current housing and employee shortages in the Mansfield region?

Mansfield faces an acute shortage of rental houses; without access to rental accommodation, Mansfield businesses can’t secure new employees.
1. Initiate an inclusive National Housing Summit. 2. Engage key stakeholders to increase housing accessibility and affordability. 3. Innovate - for example, three way partnership between councils, state government, and local builders. 4. Mansfield releases land, partnership with local builders; agreed fixed design and price equals lower costs.
Local families access  Labor’s 25 per cent first home buyer fund - shared equity scheme. 5. By increasing housing stock locally will free up rental accommodation. 6. Invite private Mansfield Superannuation fundholders to invest in innovative housing projects.

In your final pitch to the Eildon electorate, why should they vote for you?

I’ve lived and worked in health and community services in this Electorate for 38 years.  I built services women and families needed like emergency relief, DV, childcare and afterschool care.
As a single working mother, I needed all these services to keep a roof over our head. It wasn’t easy.  After 12 years, it’s time to change representative to Labor. I commit to look with fresh eyes, passion, energy, capacity and credentials to advocate to the Andrews’ government for what you need, now and everyday going forward.

Cindy McLeish - Liberal

How do you propose to address the current housing and employee shortages in the Mansfield region?

Sourcing people for jobs is a challenge faced locally and across the state.
There is no silver bullet. We need to rebuild business confidence in Victoria.  We need to encourage and facilitate more skilled workers from overseas. Increasing opportunity for people to train locally will see regional workers stay regional. We are committed to unlocking 50,000 extra lots of land across regional Victoria to assist in the housing shortage, without raising taxes. Many councils included extra lots for future release in their precinct structure plans. There are 38 outstanding precinct structure plans with the Minister which will be fast tracked.

In your final pitch to the Eildon electorate, why should they vote for you?

I am committed to making the region the best place to live and have a solid track record in advocating for the community and individuals in need of assistance. This has seen investment in local education, sports, health facilities and roads.  On my advocacy, we have committed $60 million to rebuild the Mansfield Hospital. I will continue to support establishment of Mansfield emergency services precinct, and we have committed $10 billion to road maintenance over ten years, delivering better, safer roads by long-term and strategic planning across the road network.

Wil Mikelsons - Australian Greens

How do you propose to address the current housing and employee shortages in the Mansfield region?

There is a housing shortage in our townships.  Governments have sold off social housing, contributing to the shortage of affordable housing. The Greens plan includes building 100,000 new public homes across Victoria over the next ten years. We will also push government to introduce a housing levy so developers contribute their share to affordable housing and allocate affordable homes to first home buyers.  Worker shortages can be tackled with better funding of TAFE and training in regional areas Incentives to bring trainers to regional towns will be key to upskilling local and new residents to fill jobs in a range of industries.

In your final pitch to the Eildon electorate, why should they vote for you?

Climate change is an existential threat.  The planet is warming and we must act urgently to avoid a climate catastrophe.  The Greens will invest $9 Billion into publicly owned large scale renewable energy with a target of 100 per cent renewables by 2030.  Protecting native forests is critical to avoiding escalating climate impacts.  Ending logging will reduce emissions by an estimated 24 per cent in Australia, but only with a transition plan to move workers into new jobs.

Small business has suffered far too long, so I will fight for reduced taxation and operating costs which will in turn give Victorians more of an incentive to be regionally based. Additionally, I will promote a balance of funding for public schools to boost the quality of education in Regional Victoria, also making rural living a more desirable option. I will push for reforms of the bureaucratic red tape surrounding new homes, helping reduce build costs substantially to encourage housing affordability and growth.  Freedom Party of Victoria is committed to the support and defence of jobs, homes, and families.

In your final pitch to the Eildon electorate, why should they vote for you?

Members of Parliament today are compromised.  The ongoing swing of power between the major parties is a result of Victorians being strung with empty promises that do not deliver needed, meaningful, or sustained change.  I will stand for Eildon to become a real voice for the people, to push back against the bureaucracy, and to put power back into the people’s hands.  Not a career politician, just someone who wants to see humanity restored and democracy thrive in this great state.

Kammy Cordner-Hunt - Independent

How do you propose to address the current housing and employee shortages in the Mansfield region?

This has quickly become a serious and unprecedented problem for Mansfield, but we are not alone - in fact it has become a recent, global phenomenon.  The Airbnb gig economy brought a new way to both invest in property and travel in comfort, but it rolled-out without any plan for the future.  As an Independent, I’ll work with whichever government for the best possible solutions.  I will make sure that there will be a bipartisan approach, with a serious, evidence-based, expert-driven consultative process that also looks at what is being done about this issue, successfully, in other parts of the world.

In your final pitch to the Eildon electorate, why should they vote for you?

Independents have proven, at Federal level (especially here in Indi), that they can serve their constituents very well and get things done locally, while also putting pressure on the party in government to implement necessary positive changes - climate action, anti-corruption, and, for Eildon, ceasing native logging.  People should vote for me so I can take a strong, independent voice to Spring Street and boldly stand up for the issues that concern our electorate, and not be shackled by party-specific mandates.
