Country week tennis returns

THE Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club has entered five teams into the highly anticipated Victorian Country Week to be held in Swan Hill.

The event will run from Monday, February 14 through to Friday, February 18 with over 1000 players set to call Swan Hill home for the week and play off for the chance to lift a trophy in one of the 23 grades on offer.

Barry Sullivan is captaining Wangaratta's second grade side – Wangaratta Blue in the B Special 1 competition and cannot wait to hit the court in Swan Hill.

"It's really exciting to be heading to Swan Hill, especially after missing out again last year," Sullivan said.

"It's a fantastic venue and it's going to be great to catch up with some players who we've been playing against for 20 years.

"There are great friendships and camaraderie at the tournament but the tennis is definitely competitive."

Sullivan's team will include Phil Peck, Kevin Callahan, John Brunner, Frazer Judd and Frank Harris with all players in fantastic form at club level.

"We're really happy with how our team is looking," Sullivan said.

"John Brunner and Phil Peck have been playing a lot of tennis and are in form at the moment and then you have the stalwarts of Kevin Callahan, Frank Harris and myself with also the inclusion of some talented youth in Frazer Judd who hits the ball really well and has mobility on his side."
