Get your booster for maximum protection

THERE are currently 206 active COVID–19 cases in the whole Strathbogie Shire, including 76 active cases.

Many shops have had to shut temporarily such as Northern Republic, Balmattum Butchery or Burke's Bakery and the virus is becoming more and more rampant.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Laura Binks called on everyone to get their booster as soon as they become eligible.

"As coronavirus (COVID–19) numbers continue to rise we know this is creating significant levels of uncertainty, and even fear, in our community," Cr Binks said.

"We urge you to look after your family and friends.

"Reach out for an online chat if you know people who are isolating, or even a quick message of support.

"We also urge our community follow the advice of the health experts by booking in for a booster when eligible.

"If you had your second dose four months ago or earlier, you are due for your third now.

"From February those who had their second dose three months ago, will be eligible for a booster."

Euroa Medical Family Practive doctor Malcolm Altson said the original course of two COVID–19 injections was initially felt to be enough to protect against the known varieties of the coronavirus .

"As time has moved on it has been discovered that the immunity offered by all the vaccines decreases," he said.

"A third vaccine may well offer much longer immunity.

"Whether you call this a booster or just a third dose is probably semantic.

"Our information is being updated all the time."

Dr Altson said with the new outbreak of Omicron the booster dose is even more important to offer protection against this very infectious variant.

"The data suggests this should be given at least three months after the second dose to get the best immune response," he said.

"At present the government has made available the vaccine for any time after three months for those who are immunocompromised and after four months for everyone else.

"When there is available supply this will change to three months for everyone.

"My advice to everyone is to get a booster dose as soon as you can, it doesn't matter whether it is a Pfizer or Moderna, just get what you can."
