Newbold to stay on at Greta

GRETA senior coach Greg Newbold will stay on in the top job with the Blues for season 2023.

Newbold, entering his seventh season in the role, recommitted to the club this week after a strong year by the Blues in both grades, with their seniors and reserves finishing in the top four.

"We just had a conversation and it led to if I wanted to continue coaching – they were happy for me to continue coaching and I was happy to continue coaching," he said.

"Everything we do is to look at what the future might look like.

"If I felt or the club felt that we needed to go in a different direction coaching–wise, then we'd do that, but I'm pretty happy to continue.

"The most important thing is the footy side of the club is in a really good, strong state going forward, that's how we looked at it and I was very happy to continue doing it.

"I was also very happy to hand over to someone else if that's what the club felt was the necessary thing to do."

The Blues have been flying under the radar in recent years, stringing consistent form together through developing their own list rather than relying on big name signings.

"We're continually growing each year without landing high–profile recruits," Newbold said.

"We're a very even team and we'll continue to improve and we think we're closer than we've ever been, so I think if we can just improve again a bit more organically within the group, but also add a handful of players to increase our depth then I think we'll be in a pretty strong position.
