Warnings still in place for Porepunkah township

Police are continuing to advise the Porepunkah community and surrounds to stay indoors and remain vigilant as the massive manhunt for a suspected gunman was still active.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still being determined and it remains an active and ongoing situation.

A significant search is actively underway to locate the suspected offender, Dezi Freeman, who allegedly killed two police officers and sesriously injured another.

He was last seen leaving his Rayner Track property and fleeing into bushland.

On Wednesday morning, Victoria Police continued to urge the public in and around the township of Porepunkah to remain indoors until further notice.

They urged people not to travel into the area, which has been cordoned off since the incident took place around 10:30am Tuesday.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau have declared the Porepunkah area within a four nautical mile, (around 7.5km) radius of Feathertop Winery a no-fly zone and will be in place until at least 11:30am, Friday, 29 August.

This includes all aircraft and drones.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said given the suspect in this matter is heavily armed, this condition has been granted due to the risk to aircraft and drones, as well as potential implications associated with the suspect tracking police movements based off media coverage.

A huge amount of police remain in the area including detectives from the Homicide Squad, detectives from the Armed Crime Squad and Fugitive Squad, police from the Special Operations Group and Critical Incident Response Team.
