LAST Tuesday saw the Home Pennant having a break to allow the members to enjoy our annual Melbourne Cup Bowls.
With quite a few players deciding to attend the Mansfield races there was a modest field of nine players enjoying the festivities on the day with the winners being Alan Dobson, Ian Morley and Tom Ingpen with two wins 32pts.
The O&M Midweek Pennant was played on Wednesday as is the norm every year during the Melbourne Cup Week with Mansfield travelling to Wodonga.
After the allotted ends, Wodonga took an easy win 70 shots to 52.
John Foots, Noel Jackson, Irene Fuller and Enid Smith had a solid start and after the 10th end they the lead 13 shots to six.
Wodonga picked up 11 shots in four ends to take the lead and never looked back winning 23 shots to 17.
Mark Bettany, Jenny Walsh, Lyn Holland and Brian Revell got off to a slow start being down 10 shots to one after the 7th end and with Wodonga piling on the pressure they took an impressive win 29 shots to 10.
The final rink of George Peterson, Elaine Peterson, Ray Close and Marian Ryan had a slow start but by the 5th end they had levelled the score on five all.
Wodonga began to struggle and with Mansfield winning nine of the next 16 ends they took a great win 25 shots to 18.
Mansfield remains on top of the ladder by two points and will play Dederang at home this week.
Friday’s social bowls saw 19 players enjoying the day with the winners of the day being Mick Walsh, Tony Pridham and Alex Scherini with two wins 35pts from Jenny Walsh, John Lobbe and Anne Wileman with two wins 32pts.
Saturday Pennant saw the A2 side travelling to play YMGCR with the home team taking a close win by seven shots 82/75.
Ray Robinson, Graham Smith, Mick Walsh and Sid Revell had a quick start leading seven nil after the 3rd end but by the 8th end the game was all square at nine all.
YMGCR won 5 ends in a row to lead 18 to 9 and even though Mansfield won six of the last eight ends, YMGCR hung to win 22/18.
George Peterson, Elaine Peterson, Noel Jackson and Marian Ryan struggled for the first half of the game being down four shots to 13 after 12 ends.
To Mansfield’s credit and with determination they turned the game around to take the lead on the penultimate end 17 shots to 15 but YMGCR managed to score a count of two on the last end to draw the game 17 all.
Fantastic comeback Mansfield.
Mark Bettany, Lyn Foots, Ray Close and Mick Hoban started slow and were down by five after the 8th end 4/9.
Mansfield began to find their range and by the second last end held the lead 19 shots to 14 and with the home team outplaying Mansfield on the last end scoring six shots, they stole the win 20 shots to 19.
The final rink of Mike Harrison, Peter Roberts, Chris Laws and Shane O’Brien had a close game early with the score being seven all after six ends.
Mansfield picked up a count of six on the 15th end which put them in the lead 18/13 but YMGCR picked up 10 shots in the last six ends to take the win 23 shots to 21.
Mansfield is now in 8th place on the ladder hoping to turn their fortunes around against Corowa Civic at home this week.
The A4 side travelled to Benalla and secured a great win 82 shots to 64.
Winston Taylor, Gary Fuller, John Foots and Ken Rainsbury started well and had the lead 11 shots to six after the 11th end.
Benalla fought back to take the lead 14 shots to 11 after the 15th end but Mansfield picked up a count of four on the very next end to regain the lead 15/14.
Unfortunately, Benalla won the last five ends to record the win 19/15.
Graeme Tyers, Nick Klien, Don Cameron and Pam Zierk-Mahoney were quick out of the blocks and were fantastic all day winning 17 of the 21 ends giving Benalla a lesson in bowls winning 30 shots to 6.
What a fantastic team effort.
Rick Nichols, Jenny Walsh, Vicki Klein and Ross Parsons struggled for the first half the game down 16 shots to five after the 9th end.
Mansfield battled back to be down by just four after the 18th end but Benalla hung on to take the win 23 shots to 18.
The final rink of Steve Spence, Irene Fuller, Yvonne Robinson and Doug Morley had a close tussle all day and by the 17th end the scores were level on 13 shots a piece.
Mansfield scored five shots to three for the rest of the game taking a good win 18 shots to 16.
The ladder sees Mansfield holding 4th spot and they will play Rutherglen away this Saturday.
