CALLS are going out for any girls to put their hand up and become involved in cricket with the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association’s upcoming All Girls Cricket League competition.

While the competition is targeted to the 10-13 year old range, girls outside of the age bracket are still encouraged to give it a go.

The association recently met with interested clubs, with a short, pre-Christmas competition to be conducted from November 10, and a second competition to be held in the new year.

The clubs fielding teams in the initial competition will be Beechworth, Benalla Bushrangers, Rovers United Bruck and Yarrawonga Mulwala.

Wangaratta and District Cricket Association secretary Wayne Cooper said the idea was to start small and establish a foundation, before opening the competition up to the whole league.

“We had a meeting with clubs the other night: Beechworth, Benalla, Rovers United Bruck and Yarrawonga Mulwala,” he said.

“It’ll be three rounds before Christmas with the hope of more clubs joining another competition to be held after Christmas.

“We want to allow more teams to enter after Christmas - we’ll start off by playing super 8s style, then increase to T20 matches with a hard ball.”

Cooper said holding the competition while the WBBL was ongoing and televised meant more young girls would be interested in playing cricket.

“Obviously we want the all-girls competition to be a regular fixture, just another competition, and we want girls to play against girls and not having to worry about playing against the boys,” he said.

“We’ve set up the competition on PlayHQ and each club will set up their own registration form.

“Please contact those clubs individually or check out their Facebook page for a link.”
