LARGE and enthusiastic crowds turned out in their summer finest to enjoy a great day of picnic racing at Mansfield on Sunday, January 9.

Strong fields of 10 competitors provided great racing and some thrilling finishes over the six race card.

Veteran Carrum Downs trainer Ray Caldwell took out the Mansfield Hygain Cup in race five with Melinda McDonald riding his five year old mare Material Mistress to victory.

The Timberline Pastoral Maiden Plate was taken out by Unanchored, trained by Matt Ivill and ridden by Tracey Johnson.

The Bartender and Magnusdottir placed second and third respectively.

Race two was the Mansfield Dairy and Food Service Trophy, and it was won by The Brightside, trained by Dan McCarthy and ridden by Jack Virgona.

Calypso Rich and Laststrikeyourout took the places.

Race three was the McGrath Mansfield Open Trophy Handicap.

Foxtrot Mo, trained by Don Dwyer and ridden by Shaun Cooper, took out the honours, with Crooked Creek and Earl of Kendall from NZ placing.

Race 4, The Hans Grimus Memorial Trophy, which ran prior to the Mansfield Hygain Cup, was won by Marsoom, trained by Katrina McAdam and ridden by Tracey Johnson.

Tofik Tok and Shotchu took out the places.

Local Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan won in the last race of the day, the Canary Capital Trophy, with Outrich ridden by Raymond Douglas, to cap off another fantastic day at the Mansfield Races.
