THE rain did not stop visitors, locals and enthusiasts from having a great time at the Mansfield Cup on Sunday, January 7.
The event featured a variety of races and activities for one and all as well as the traditional Fashions on the Field.
The rain rolled in right as the gates opened at 11am, putting a damper on hopes the weather would hold until later in the afternoon.
As the rain continued to fall, guests made the best of a bad situation, creating a lively atmosphere at the Lawn Party and flocking to undercover areas to keep out of the downpour.
The Fashions on the Field drew a large crowd of spectators as the dreary weather continued.
Judges Sarah Cox and Karli Owen had the challenging task of deciding the winners and runner-ups in a variety of categories and congratulated everyone for their stunning and weather-appropriate fashion choices.
Host Sarah Duffy encouraged spectators to get involved and made contestants feel comfortable on stage showing off their best.
Despite the rain, the track retained its integrity remarkably well, with riders and officials alike happy with the quality.
Punters had a good day out with some young men successfully betting the right horse for five of the six races.
Mansfield District Racing Club President Leanne Backwell was very happy with the numbers through the gate.
“The crowd has been sensational and really got into the spirit of the day,” she said.
“Due to the good conditions of the track the trainers have continued to run their horses so we haven't had too many scratchings.
“We have a lot of visitors from other areas who are up in the district holidaying which brings in a different crowd from the Melbourne Cup Day race.
“I want to thank the hard work of the committee; there is a lot of work to set up and pack up, and in this weather it is not so easy,” Ms Backwell added.
“Thanks also to Gerald Eagan and his staff for maintaining the track the way they do.”
