MANSFIELD'S Cup Day Picnic Races, one of the biggest and most anticipated events on the High Country sporting calendar, was cancelled late last week.
Another victim of the persistent rainfall and soaking conditions, the day of racing, fashions, punting and festivities was cancelled last Thursday following days of speculation that it and a number of other big events around town wouldn't go ahead.
The decision was made following a track and course inspection by CRV officials.
This year's races were expected to be bigger and better than ever, after a two year hiatus due to COVID restrictions.
The race field was anticipated to host six main races on the day with horses coming from far and wide around the country.
It's a day where the Mansfield Race Club grounds usually come alive with marquees, bookmakers, food stalls, fashions on the field competitions, from the young to the seniors, lots of horse racing and wandering entertainers.
Fashion Ambassadors Adrianne Moore and Tess Southgate were set to welcome contestants and spectators to the Fashion Marquee, where MC Sarah Duffy planned to introduce contestants and announce the winners.
Sadly, none of those planned festivities went ahead.
Club President Leanne Backwell stated that although the decision was greatly disappointing, the safety and comfort of both the racing industry and patrons was paramount.
With continual rain leading into Tuesday there was no alternative but to cancel.
"The club is disappointed that the large number of families and groups who booked tickets and packages will not have the opportunity to enjoy a great day of picnic racing," said Mrs Backwell.
"The support from our local community has been outstanding, both in patronage and sponsorship from local businesses."
The Mansfield District Racing Club has advised that all ticket holders will receive information on ticket refunds in the following days.
The Mansfield Picnic Races will return on January 8 2023 with the 168th running of the Mansfield Cup.
There will be a six race card, fashions on the field, music, food, bars, and hopefully, much more amenable conditions for people to enjoy.
Ticketing and package information for the January races will soon be available via www.country.racing.com
