MANSFIELD Little Athletics Club has a strong heritage and has provided a wonderful avenue for juniors to get into the sport and increase their fitness since 1972.

"Athletics is a sport for everyone and one of the few sports you can get everyone doing something at the same time," said coach Liam Delany.

"I'm encouraging parents and anyone who wants to get fit to come along to our training sessions, because concurrently we'll have an adult session where they can participate while I'm taking the kids."

Little Athletics started in Geelong over 50 years ago and now has 100 centres across metro Melbourne and regional Victoria.

It's an athletics program for five to 15 year olds to compete weekly with their friends, and gets them active with different forms of running, jumping and throwing.

"The variety is the key and that's the beauty of athletics," said Liam.

"It's about those fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing, but you can do that in so many different ways."

The community–oriented, year round sport is broken into a summer and winter season, with an evolving program to complement the changes in weather and age groups as kids get older and more physically capable.

Little Athletes have one goal during the year and that's to achieve their own personal bests.
