MANSFIELD'S current dual Australian speedway champion Max Fricke stormed to his second Grand Prix win before more than 50,000 spectators at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on the weekend.

This is Fricke's second GP win after standing on the top step of the podium in round 7 of the World Championships in Torun, Poland in 2020.

Fricke overcame a last place in his first heat of the night to take several wins in his remaining heats to ensure his progression to the semi–finals, where he faced the 2019 and 2020 World Champion and current series leader, Bartoz Zmarzllik of Poland, at his home GP.

Fricke made a lightning start off the outside gate and traded places with his rival on a number of occasions before Zmarzllik cracked under the pressure and dropped to third place, eliminating him from the final.

Fricke showed his class by gating superbly and taking the lead in the final before a fall by another rider halted the race.

Under immense pressure to repeat his start, Fricke once again held his composure and led the final from start to finish ahead of Denmark's Leon Madsen second and Sweden's Freddie Lindgren third.

The result elevates Max to 6th position in the World Championship after a disappointing first round in Croatia two weeks ago.

"This is a memory I will never forget," said Fricke.

"My first GP win was during COVID and in a stadium that was closed to spectators.

"Although that was an incredible achievement for me and will always be very special, this time I could really soak up the atmosphere because it's one of the biggest GPs on the calendar, so a nice one to win.

"Racing against the top 16 riders in the world who are all fighting for the ultimate goal of a World Title is pretty cutthroat and really challenging.

"That's obviously what we're all fighting for but to win a round of the GPs, and to be able to stand on the top of the podium while they play the Australian National Anthem, feels pretty amazing."

There's not much time for Max to rest though.

He will be lining up again next weekend in Prague, Czech Republic for round three of the 2022 FIM Speedway GP series, which is contested over 10 rounds with the final round to be held in October.
