PAUL Konig began his motor racing career in 2017 driving a Ford Escort Mark II.

He started racing in the Pedders Sprints at Winton before getting his hands on a Mazda RX7 the following year.

In 2018 he competed and won multiple Repco Supersprints and MSCA Supersprints.

But in a couple of weeks' time on November 11 and 12, Konig will take on his biggest test yet at the drivers' Everest: Mount Panorama.

The Challenge Bathurst event draws many of Australia's racing elite and people from around the globe, and provides an unrivalled challenge and an exclusive opportunity to drive on the famous Mount Panorama Racing Circuit.

Two other Mansfield drivers are entering the Regularity event over the weekend, but Konig will be entering the invitation only Supersprint.

"I'm doing the sprint, which is for times of two minutes and thirty seconds and under," said Konig

"The GT3 series will be there and have their own sessions, and the Supercar guys will be there running for practice.

"It's a like a semi–pro event."

Bathurst is noted around the world for its unpredictable nature and the drama of its physicality – including blind corners, sudden gradient changes and the fastest corner in touring car racing.

The track was hand dug during the recession in the 1930s, and originally intended to be a scenic route through the Bald Hills.

In the late 1930s the Light Car Club of New South Wales suggested to the city council plans to turn the road into a racing track that would be both visually spectacular and challenging to vehicles and drivers.

It's the allure of this illustrious event and revered track for which Konig is most excited, and has seen him working tirelessly upgrading and preparing his yellow RX7 over the past few months.

"Every time we find a weakness, we sort it out," he said.

"A lot of the changes are just playing with setup to optimise it for speed and reliability.

"Cars can reach 300km an hour down Conrod Straight, so a big focus is getting the car safe for these high speeds.

"Mount Panorama is just one of the best tracks in the world and I can't wait to race around there."
