Why Mansfield feels like home for Cr Rohan Webb

ROHAN Webb might be the youngest councillor in Mansfield Shire's history. "I haven't scoured the town's records, but I'm pretty sure I hold that title," Rohan said with a laugh. The 35–year–old is currently serving his first term on council, a position he enjoys immensely. "I really enjoy the diversity of the role," Rohan explained. "We deliver all kinds of services, from social activities for young people to instructional planning for the community. "You get to learn and understand how everything fits together." Born in Townsville, Queensland, Rohan and his family moved to Melbourne during his primary school years. His parents later bought a caravan park in Gough's Bay and Rohan moved again to Mansfield. "It was a big shock to move high schools and move away from all my friends," he said. "For young people, your friends are basically your entire world." However, Rohan said he settled very quickly. "Mansfield was a community that just completely welcomed me with open arms and I honestly felt like I was home for the first time," he said. After graduation, Rohan went on to study electro–technology and obtained qualifications in business administration. "I've always floated around an engineering mechanical sort of space," he explained. "I eventually moved to an engineering company which supplied automated parking systems and did business admin there." Rohan said the skills he picked up from previous jobs were invaluable for his role on council. "From a business administration point of view, council is a very complex business," he said. "Having planning and mechanical knowledge is really useful and has been really advantageous for me." While Rohan devotes most of his time to the Mansfield community, he has several passions outside of work. "It's probably not a massive shock but I am a massive nerd, I love space and astronomy," he said. "I could sit for hours and talk about it. "I'm happy to watch a good sci–fi movie, but also happy to talk about physics of black holes." For last year's annual Book Week, Rohan dressed up as a space wizard, decked top to toe in a flowing constellation cloak and a telescope. "I think the kids really loved it and it was a really fun day," he said. Looking to the future, Rohan said there was "no specific goal he wanted to tick off" during his time on council. "I'd like to see us take a step forward in technology and really leverage our position in the High Country," he said. "But at the end of the day it's not up to me what we do, it's up to the people that I'm here to represent."
