THE installation of more eye-catching signs and road markings will get under way over the coming months.
The State Government says the new road markings and speed signs at town entrances have demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing crashes overseas and will be installed at more towns.
This follows positive community feedback since gateways started being rolled out in 2019, which included at Mansfield.
“With more people on the road exploring all that regional Victoria has on offer, this investment into gateways will enhance the safety of our towns,” said Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria).
“Gateways are important for alerting drivers to local traffic conditions, however, it is vital motorists follow this signage to protect pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists also using the roads.”
Gateways have also been installed at another 170 towns in regional Victoria with a further 37 towns to get the signs and line marking before the end of the year.
Community gateways are designed to reduce speeds, increase driver attention, and boost safety for all vulnerable road users, including around main streets and boulevards where 24 per cent of pedestrian serious injury crashes occur.
Similar community gateway treatments have already reduced crashes by 26 to 35 per cent in towns in New Zealand.
The gateways project supports Victoria's Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 which set an ambitious target to halve road deaths and significantly reduce serious injuries by 2030, and even zero road deaths by 2050.
“We're delivering these community gateways to ensure more Victorians make it home safely every day – boosting the safety of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians right across the state,” said Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Ben Carroll.
“Through our investment in better safety infrastructure – and more broadly through Victoria’s Road Safety Strategy – we’re taking action to increase awareness and visibility on our roads.”
